Drag Legacy Curator Intern

Join The Mahogany Project’s Hands Off Our Drag initiative as a Drag Legacy Curator Intern. This unique role combines historical archiving, storytelling, and community engagement to preserve and celebrate the artistry, resilience, and culture of Texas Drag, particularly its Black transgender and queer roots.

Collaborate with a creative team of designers, photographers, and videographers to craft narratives and digital content while engaging with Houston's drag and entertainment community.

Key Responsibilities

Historical Archiving and Storytelling (40%)

  • Research and document the contributions of Black transgender and queer entertainers in Texas Drag.  

  • Collaborate with The Mahogany Archives and Charles Law Archive to curate stories and artifacts.  

  • Create narrative content for digital and physical platforms to preserve cultural history.  

Content Development and Digital Engagement (30%)

  • Work with graphic designers and media teams to develop engaging content for social media, websites, and storytelling campaigns.  

  • Assist in managing and updating campaign-related website content.  

  • Promote events like the International Day of Drag and other community-focused gatherings.  

Community Interaction and Advocacy (30%)  

  • Build relationships with local drag artists and entertainment venues to foster collaboration.  

  • Attend and participate in community events and workshops to amplify performer stories.  

  • Act as a bridge between The Mahogany Project and the Houston drag community, ensuring authenticity in all initiatives.  

Qualifications

  • Passion for cultural preservation, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and community engagement.  

  • Strong research and storytelling abilities to create compelling narratives.  

  • Proficiency with digital platforms, content management systems, and social media.  

  • Highly organized, adaptable, and a collaborative team player.  

  • Comfortable engaging with diverse populations, particularly Black TQLGBIA+ communities. 

Structure & Benefits

  • Location: Hybrid role based in Houston, TX, combining remote work with in-person outreach.  

  • Commitment: 10–12 weeks with a flexible schedule to accommodate events and deadlines.
