Community Center

The Mahogany Project Community Center provides real-time support for trans and queer people in need. Our peer-led model means we hire and train staff from our local community to be super-heroes and support our people with getting the things they need to survive the night- be it a bus ticket to get home or emergency housing support or gender affirming clothing and hygiene supplies.

We know the unique needs our most impacted folks are facing day to day, which allows us to minimize the barriers that often plague social services and ensure our community members get support in real-time.

  • The Mahogany Project was created to center and support the transgender, non-binary and gender non conforming communities in Houston, Texas. Today, The Mahogany Project is proud to support our trans communities and our broader LGBT community in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area and the Southern United States.

  • We Organize: We are in the trenches- from the state capitol to city hall and door to door to organize for trans futures. We partner with trusted policy changemakers, such as the ACLU of Texas, Transgender Education Network of Texas (TENT), Equality Texas, Liberate Abortion, and the Groundswell Fund to fight against transphobia and the growing anti-trans and anti-LGBT legislation happening in Texas and the South.

We Celebrate: For people of color- celebration and community gathering is key to our survival. We thrive when we are seen, and held by our communities. We create spaces that foster inspiration, empowerment and beautiful memories. Be it a pageant or our annual Black Trans Empowerment Week- we make moments for joy. These efforts are critical for sustaining us in the midst of great disparity, growing violence against us, and existing in a world that does not want us to exist.

  • Our program offers comprehensive assistance for individuals seeking Name and Gender Marker Change applications, encompassing Superior Court gender marker changes, Texas DMV updates, and Birth Certificates. This support is peer-led and made possible through our valuable collaboration with the Transgender Legal Aid Clinic Texas. Additionally, we extend services such as document notarization and financial assistance specifically tailored to BIPOC TGNC individuals within our network who are in the process of recovering and updating their important documents.

To further enhance our support, we conduct quarterly on-site sessions led by trained legal professionals. Please note that pre-registration is required for these sessions due to limited space availability. Furthermore, our dedicated staff ensure that all necessary documents required for name and gender marker changes are readily accessible on-site, streamlining the process for our participants.
